Deep Retrofit House

Taking on a mid-century house which had been very neglected and trying to turn it into an energy-efficient family home required both courage and vision.  Fortunately Lomas and Mitchell Architects’ Practice owner Richard Lomas had both and was able to fulfil a career ambition of carrying out a deep retrofit on an older property.  The house lent itself to a full strip-out, given its condition, and Richard set about improving the thermal performance and air-tightness of the property.  Measures taken included triple glazed windows and doors, lots of insulation, airtight construction, a whole-house ventilation system with heat recovery and installing renewables for heating and hot water, having taken out the mains gas.  Richard’s deep understanding of building physics and thorough attention to detail has resulted in a comfortable, stylish and energy-efficient home – a real transformation.
